Dear Sir
We are obliged for your letter but somewhat disappointed. We understood from Messrs Novello + Co. What you had written or were writing a new work of somewhat similar character and length to the “Spectre’s Bride” and that would be willing to accept our offer of 100 guineas for the first performance of it in England under your own baton.
There would certainly be no difficulty in your making such arrangements with Messrs Novello or the printing + publishing of the work as would be perfectly satisfactory to you. We are sending them a copy of your letter + of this reply + they will doubtless write to you on the subject.
We earnestly hope that you will kindly consent to meet our wishes as the success of our Festival will greatly depend upon the production of the expected new work from your pen.
If you are likely to be in England shortly we should be greatly obliged if you would give us the opportunity of an interview at which all details could be discussed + arranged to your entire satisfaction.
We trust you will shortly favour us with a reply to this letter.
