Permit me to offer you in a few words my sincere congratulations upon the successful performance and reception by the public of your most beautiful symphony. To hear this work is like rain after a long drought or manna to those starving in the desert; from first to last it is lovely and begin a work of rare genius altogether above criticism! In writing to express my pleasure and satisfaction I feel I am perhaps assuming much, but I know I do but say what very many felt who had the good fortune to hear your symphony. I have written this letter with the same pen you used when you so kindly wrote your autograph for me (for a lady-friend of mine) on Tuesday.
