Dear Sir,

As Vice Chancellor of the University of Cambridge I have the pleasure of informing you that the University would feel honoured if you would allow us to confer upon you the Honorary Degree of a Doctor in Music. Your noble compositions, so much praised] in England, hardly allow us to regard you as a stranger.

My friend Professor Stanford is, I know, writing to you more fully. I will only express the hope that it may be agreeable to you to come to Cambridge during the month of June to receive the Degree.
