Dear Mrs. Thurber,
As you know I take the greatest interest in the development of music in the United States and specifically in the broad and intelligent work of the National Conservatory.
It was greatly to my regret that I was obliged to interrupt the much interesting work which I had begun in the development of the American compositions. Your annual prize competition must be carried on, and that will be my principal work.
In reply to your request that I should resume my duties as Director, I beg to state, that I can not make arrangements to do so for 1897 - in the meantime you are at liberty to use my name as Director of the National Conservatory of Music.
