January 20th 1887 My dear Herr Dvorak I shall be very much obliged to you if you can answer my letter as to the subject of your Sacred Oratorio for the Birmingham Festival of 1888. Some time ago, the London papers stated that you had chosen for your subject Cardinal Newman’s poem, “The Dream of St. Gerontius”, but I have heard nothing from you, and I therefore write to ask. You are aware that we expect to have the pianoforte score of the work from you by March 1888 and we have then to put it into the hands of the chorus for rehearsal. I am, Yours very sincerely, R.
