A very important society in Scotland intends to give at least three performances of ‘Ludmila’ in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Dundee (all with the same orchestra) during the first week in December. They would much like you to conduct these performances. Do you think you could stay in England so long, Leeds being in October?

I think they would pay you about 100 £ (one hundred pounds). Will you kindly let me know what you think about it by return of post as they want an answer.

I have been trying to persuade some other societies to ask you to conduct but have not succeeded up to the present time.

When shall we receive part 3 of “Ludmila”? I am afraid the whole work will be very long. The Leeds Chorus are delighted with the first part. 

I am sorry it is so long since I wrote to you last but I have been dreadfully busy travelling[!]¹  about Paris and other places.
