I am sorry to say we could not give you quite so much as you propose for the ‘Requiem’ : being necessarily a very serious and solemn work it is not likely to have a very large sale and it will not be possible for small societies to give performances of it.

We would be pleased to give you the same amount you received for “Ludmila” - £ 650 : this with the £ 100 you will at least receive from the Birmingham Committee makes £ 750 which is certainly not a small price.

We would at the same time take the Symphony if you wish it: but we could not give more than £ 100 for this for reasons I have already told you. I know that Symphonies have almost no sale in England and it would be difficult for us to get much sale in Germany etc.

We shall be delighted to see the Requiem as soon as you can send over the M[anu]S[cript]
