Honored Sir
May I address you upon a subject in which you seem to be much interested: viz-street cries. After reading your article in the Feb[ruary] Harper I looked up a collection of street cries I have been gathering for several years, + am writing an article for the Woman’s edition of the Courier Journal to be illustrated with these cries I send you. I collected them just for the interest I took in them never expecting to make any use of them but since I began the study of composition I have found them very useful. The negro always uses the syllable “quo” instead of “coal” as you see in the illustrations. After reading your article + because I am such a lover of your music I made a trip of nearly three hundred miles to hear Mr Seidl direct your New World Symphony in Cincinnati. I was so carried away by it that I determined to send you the enclosed examples. It takes a real southern person to really understand your work in that Symphony in my humble opinion. I also have a number of unpublished negro hymns which are fine specimens. Harper Bro[ther]s have them now for examination. Hoping you will find these street cries of interest.
I am
Very resp[ectfully]
