My dear Mr. Dvořák
I am not sure if I asked you in one of my former letters about the subject of your Oratorio for Leeds.
I should be very much obliged if you would tell me the subject you are thinking of and if possible send me a copy of the libretto. In order to make a certain success with the English public it is I think of the utmost importance that the subject should be taken from the Bible. I hope therefore you will kindly give this matter your most serious consideration and let me know soon what you think about it. I see by the newspapers that Rubinstein is also writing an oratorio for Leeds: so if this is true it is all the more necessary that we should do everything to ensure a great success.
Hoping to see you soon in London (Sydenham)
I am yours most sincerely
Alfred H Littleton
I hope you have already sent back the M[anu]S[cript] of the pianoforte score of the “Spectre’s Bride” as we want it in order to engrave the Bohemian + German edition.
